Well they had to find something to do since playing baseball apparently isn't something that they do well.

Seems pretty clear to me since it says, "... since I have never seen one of these birds in person."

Orioles, the bird, are just "orioles." When you add "Baltimore" to it, it becomes the name of a baseball team.

What makes it funny is that the Oriole isn't exclusively native to the Baltimore area, thus when you are saying Baltimore Oriole, folks are always going to think that you are referring to the MLB club.
